Loss of Vision Awards

One of the most devastating injuries for a worker is the loss of his or her eyesite.  Ohio BWC has in place a formula for determining how much an injured worker may receive for loss of vision.  To initially qualify, there must be at least a 25% loss of vision due to the work injury.

The BWC determines loss of vision awards according to ORC 4123.57(B).  The award is based on the amount of vision loss for the eye(s) with an allowed condition in the claim.   Loss of uncorrected vision means the percentage of vision actually lost as a result of the injury or occupational disease for the specific eye.

A loss of vision award is based on the injured workers post injury vision prior to correction by glasses, contacts, or surgical intervention.

An example is illustrative.  An injured worker with a finding of 25% loss of vision in a 2011 claim would receive a scheduled loss payment of $24,468.75.  The percentage is determined by a physician upon request by the BWC.  For 2011, the total loss of vision award is $97,875.  Therefore, our calculation is $97,875 x 25%=$24,468.75.
